App access from anywhere for the occasional override, but built around the keypads rather than depending on them. The system works when your phone is dead, the WiFi is down, or guests are staying.

    You've outgrown smart bulbs.

    Twenty bulbs across the house, three apps, two voice assistants, and it still doesn't quite work. A Lutron RA2 Select system replaces the lot: wireless, no rewiring, fitted in two days, with the keypads sitting in the same boxes as your existing switches. Sized to grow, so adding a room in two years keeps the same platform.

    The kitchen project is the right moment.

    A new kitchen or single-floor renovation creates the cleanest window for a properly designed lighting scheme, because the circuits are being decided anyway. The rest of the house can follow later on the same platform.

    The drawings are still open.

    Hard-wired control designed alongside the electrical drawings, with every circuit specified and every keypad placed before first fix. This is where lighting control is cheapest and best, and where it is most often left too late.

FAQ.

Do I need to rewire for smart lighting?
Usually not. Wireless systems such as Lutron RA2 Select and Rako work with your existing wiring, replacing the switches rather than the cabling, and fit into most finished homes in about two days. Rewiring only becomes the better option when walls are already open, and then hard-wired control on Lutron HomeWorks or KNX gives more circuits and finer control.
What's wrong with smart bulbs?
Nothing, at small scale. The problem is what happens at twenty of them: several apps, inconsistent dimming, bulbs that lose their settings when someone uses the wall switch, and no way to make the whole house do one thing. A professional system controls the circuit rather than the bulb, so any fitting works and the wall switch always behaves.

Can I keep my existing light fittings?
In most cases yes. Because we control the circuit rather than the bulb, existing fittings usually stay. Where a fitting has a driver that dims badly, we'll say so and suggest a swap for that circuit rather than the whole house.
Does it work if the internet goes down?
Yes. The keypads and scenes run locally, so lighting keeps working with no internet and no phone. App access from outside the house is the part that needs a connection, and that is the override rather than the main way you use it.
