Saltburn and Teesside

Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a proper Victorian seaside town, built almost from scratch in the 1860s by the Quaker railway pioneer Henry Pease, with elegant terraces looking out over the North Sea. It is home to the last surviving pleasure pier on the Cleveland coast, and to the Saltburn Cliff Lift of 1884, the oldest working water-balance cliff tramway in Britain, still carrying people down to the beach, where the sands below are now one of the North East's best-loved surfing spots.
