Yarm is one of the North East's oldest market towns, strung along a wide, cobbled Georgian High Street inside a tight loop of the River Tees, with a little town hall of 1710 still sitting right in the middle of the road. It carries more history than most towns its size. It was at the George and Dragon on the High Street, back in 1820, that the meeting was held which set the Stockton and Darlington Railway in motion, the line that effectively began the railway age, and the great 43-arch Yarm Viaduct has carried the trains high over the rooftops and the river ever since.
