How much does a Control4 system cost in the UK?
Short version: anywhere from about £4,000 for one room done properly to £50,000 and beyond for a whole house. That's a frustrating answer when you're trying to budget, so here's what actually sits behind the number, and where it goes up or down.
The controller is the cheap part.
People expect the brain of the system to be the expensive bit. It isn't. A Control4 controller is a few hundred pounds to around £1,500 depending on the model. You could buy one tomorrow.
What it costs to run a home is everything around it: the keypads on the walls, the dimmers in the consumer unit, the speakers in the ceilings, the amplifiers in the rack, the network it all sits on, and the cabling to join them up. Then the programming. A Control4 system does nothing useful out of the box. Someone has to sit down and tell it what "movie night" means in your house, which lights come on at sunset, what the one button by the front door should do when you leave.
That work is most of the value, and most of the cost. It's also the difference between a system you forget about because it just works and one you end up apologising for to guests.

What pushes the price around.
Three things move the number more than anything else.
How much is already wired. Retrofitting into a finished house, fishing cables through walls and lifting floors, costs more than a build where we run everything at first fix. If you're renovating, this is the moment to do it.
How many rooms, and how deep. Lighting in twelve rooms is a different job to lighting in three. Add blinds, heating zones and audio and each one multiplies.
How good you want it to feel. Honestly. The gap between "it works" and "it's a pleasure" is programming time and the quality of the keypads and screens you touch every day. That's where a good integrator earns their fee.
What doesn't move it much: the controller. Don't let anyone sell you on the box.

- Because you're not buying gadgets, you're buying a system that works every day for years and gets programmed around how you actually live. The hardware is professional-grade and dealer-only, and the real value is in the design and programming. Cheap smart kit is cheap until you own seven apps that don't talk to each other and a setup that falls over every firmware update.
- Do I have to pay for Control4 programming separately?
- It's part of the project, not an optional extra, and it's where a system is made or ruined. We include design, programming and a calibrated handover in the quote. Be wary of anyone who quotes you a box price and treats programming as an afterthought.
- Is Control4 worth it, or should I look at KNX or Lutron?
- Control4 is our most-installed whole-home platform because it does a lot well and the interface is genuinely good to live with. KNX suits architect-led builds that want an open standard. Lutron is the one to beat for lighting specifically. There's no single right answer, it depends on the house, the budget and the brief, and we'll tell you straight if Control4 isn't the best fit.
