Crestron is more powerful and more bespoke, and it earns its place at the very top end or in complex projects, but it's overkill and overpriced for an average home. We fit Control4 more than anything else, so take this with that in mind. But we work across all the major platforms and get asked this constantly, so here's the version we'd give a friend, not the one the brochures give you.

The best all-rounder.

Our most-installed platform, and for good reason. It ties together lighting, heating, blinds, audio, cinema, security and access about as well as anything, and the interface is genuinely good to use every day, which matters more than the spec sheet suggests. Dealer-only, so you can't DIY it, but that's the point: it's designed to be designed. For the majority of UK homes this is where we land.

Loxone

The automation and value pick.

Loxone comes at it from the automation end rather than the entertainment end. It's strong on lighting, heating and energy, and it likes to run the house for you: presence, schedules, the lot. Pound for pound it's good value, and for an automation-led brief it's excellent. It's less slick as an everyday AV interface, so it suits people who care more about the house being clever than about a beautiful media remote.

Crestron

The powerhouse, and the price.

Crestron is the most powerful and the most customisable, which is why it runs boardrooms, hotels and the very top end of residential. Almost anything is possible. The catch is that all that capability costs, in hardware and especially in bespoke programming time, and most homes never use it. Brilliant for complex or unusual projects. Overkill for a normal house.

So which one?

If you want the short answer: Control4 for most people, Crestron only when the project genuinely calls for it, Loxone if automation and energy come first. We've installed enough of all three to be relaxed about saying that.

The bigger truth is that the platform matters less than who programs it. A well-designed Loxone system runs rings around a lazily-installed Crestron one. We've fixed plenty of expensive systems that were let down by the integration, not the badge on the box. Pick the installer as carefully as the platform, then let them steer you to the right one.

And don't forget the two specialists. For lighting alone, Lutron is still the one to beat. For architect-led builds that want an open standard, KNX earns its keep. A good integrator mixes and matches rather than forcing everything through one brand.
