Media wall design: the mistakes UK homeowners make most.
A media wall is the most popular UK home AV project of the last few years, and the one most commonly built badly. The joinery is straightforward. The integration is where it goes wrong. These are the four mistakes we're called in to fix most, and how to avoid them.
Sizing the TV to the wall, not the seat.
An 85" TV doesn't belong on a 4m wall if the sofa sits 2.8m back, you'll be turning your head to follow the picture. The TV should be sized to your viewing distance using THX viewing-angle guidance, then the wall built around it.
Adding the audio too late.
A 2.0 system needs 200mm of cavity. A 3.1 surround setup needs 300mm and a concealed subwoofer position. If audio isn't specified at design stage it gets retrofitted afterwards, which means a second joinery visit at your cost.
Trapping the heat.
Modern OLED and QD-OLED TVs throttle above 35°C, and most enclosed media wall recesses hit that within 90 minutes of viewing. Without active or passive ventilation engineered in, the TV dims and ages early. It's the difference between a screen that lasts ten years and one that fades in three.
Forgetting the source rack.
The Sky box, Apple TV, console and receiver all need ventilation, signal access and somewhere a remote can reach them. Plan the source-rack location at the same time as the wall: hidden, ventilated, IR-routed and accessible.

- What's the difference between a media wall and a TV mount?
- A TV mount holds a TV on a wall. A media wall is designed joinery that houses the TV, hides every cable, conceals the audio, ventilates the kit and integrates the lighting. The functional gap is the same as a fitted kitchen versus a freestanding cupboard. Both work, but they're not the same thing.
- Can a joiner build a media wall?
- A joiner can build the box. The integration, sizing the TV to the seat, designing the audio cavity, engineering the ventilation, planning the source rack and wiring the lighting, is what makes it work as a room rather than a feature wall with a screen on it.
