Multi-room audio: Sonos or Control4?

Three sensible ways to get music into every room, and they suit three different sorts of project. The good news is there's no wrong answer here, only a best-fit. Here's how we'd help you choose.

Sonos

The easy, do-most-of-it pick.

Wireless, app-driven, genuinely good, and hard to beat for the money. Drop it into an existing house with minimal disruption, and pair Sonos amps with in-ceiling speakers for a tidy, almost-architectural result. For the majority of homes that just want great sound in every room, this is where we land.

Control4

When audio is part of one whole-home system.

If you're already building a smart home, putting audio on the same platform means one interface runs music, lighting, blinds and cinema together. The same button that dims the lights starts the playlist. It costs more than Sonos and it's dealer-installed, but you're buying integration, not just speakers.

Custom architectural

Invisible, and the best it sounds.

Flush in-ceiling, in-wall, or fully invisible plastered-in speakers from the likes of Sonance, Lithe and M&K, specified and placed by design. The highest quality and the most discreet, wired in properly. Best decided during a build or renovation, because the speakers go in before the plaster does.

The honest shortcut.

Retrofitting into a house you already live in, and you mainly want music everywhere? Start with Sonos. It'll do more than you expect for the money, and you can always grow into more later.

Building or renovating, or already putting in a smart home? That's the moment to wire in architectural speakers and, if you're going that far, to put the audio on the same platform as everything else. Doing it during the build costs a fraction of doing it after, because the walls are already open.

The thing that ruins more multi-room systems than any brand choice is afterthought. Decide early, run the cables once, and it's a joy. Bolt it on later and you'll feel the compromise every day.

Is Sonos good enough for a whole house?
For most homes, yes, and it's excellent value. Sonos covers room-by-room sound brilliantly, retrofits with little disruption, and the app is genuinely good. You step up from it for two reasons: you want the audio fully integrated into a wider smart home on one interface, or you want the discretion and quality of architectural speakers wired in during a build.
What's the difference between Sonos and Control4 for audio?
Sonos is a great standalone music system you control from its own app. Control4 folds audio into a whole-home system, so the same interface that runs your lighting, blinds and cinema also runs the music, and scenes can tie them together. If audio is all you want, Sonos. If you want one system for everything, Control4.
Are in-ceiling speakers worth it?
For multi-room and living spaces, absolutely. Modern in-ceiling and invisible speakers sound excellent when they're specified and placed properly, and they keep the room clean. For a critical-listening cinema we'd still spec dedicated speakers, and we'll tell you honestly where each belongs.
